Category comparison

AI competitor analysis tools, compared.

The buyer's shortlist now comes from ChatGPT. These are the tools that measure it — and the ones that only pretend to.

Updated: July 2026

Why this category exists separately from SEO

Semrush, Ahrefs, and SimilarWeb measure Google. They are excellent at it. They have zero signal on what ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, or Perplexity name when a buyer asks for a shortlist in your category, because that data does not live in the SERP — it lives in the providers' APIs, and you have to query them at scale to see it.

A page ranked #3 on Google for "best CRM" can be absent from ChatGPT's answer to the same question. A page ranked #18 can be the one the model cites. The two surfaces correlate weakly, which is why an entirely new category of tooling exists.

What separates a real tool from a screenshot

Five questions cut through the marketing. Ask each vendor on your shortlist:

  1. How many runs per prompt per provider per week? LLM responses vary run to run. A single screenshot is noise. A stable distribution across hundreds of runs is data.
  2. Can I see the raw API responses? Or only your summary of them? You should own the underlying evidence, not just the dashboard chart.
  3. What's the gap between "you found a problem" and "I shipped a fix"? Walk through it on the call. A tool that hands you a list and walks away costs as much as one that drafts the fix.
  4. What happens when ChatGPT changes its citation behavior? Does your historical data stay comparable, or does it reset? The category is young; the providers will change behavior.
  5. Can I export everything? If we churn, do we walk away with the data, or with nothing?

A vendor who struggles with question 3 is selling you a leaderboard. A vendor who struggles with question 5 is trying to lock you in.

Which one are you?

The category splits cleanly into two buyers. Pick the side you are on first; the tool choice follows.

You are an operator

VP Marketing, Head of Growth, or founder at a Series A-B company. You want to move the number this quarter without a sales call, a contract, or a six-month rollout. You want the asset drafted, not a dashboard to manage.

Shortlist: Monroya, Otterly. See the Otterly head-to-head.

You are an enterprise AEO team

Global brand or large agency. Dedicated headcount on AEO. SSO, SOC 2, dedicated Slack support, and breadth across many Answer Engines matter more than self-serve speed.

Shortlist: Profound, AthenaHQ enterprise. See the Profound head-to-head.

Where Monroya fits

We are built for the operator side. Four providers covered deeply, a per-stage buyer-journey matrix as the home screen, drafts generated inline with each opportunity, and a 30-day playbook that tells you what to do — not just what to watch. No sales call to see your own data. Trial finishes inside an hour.

If your shortlist already includes one of the enterprise platforms, our head-to-head pages take that comparison on directly without dodging where they win.

Frequently asked questions

Is this just SEO competitor analysis with new branding?
No. SEO competitor tools measure Google ranking. AI competitor analysis tools query OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, and Perplexity directly and measure which companies the model names in its answer. The signals correlate weakly; a page ranked #3 on Google can be invisible in ChatGPT, and vice versa.
Can I just use Semrush or Ahrefs?
For Google work, yes. For AI visibility work, no. Semrush and Ahrefs have no telemetry on what ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, or Perplexity say when a buyer asks for a shortlist in your category — that data only exists in the providers' APIs and the tools that sample them at scale.
How many AI assistants should the tool cover?
Four: ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and Perplexity. They are the only providers with measurable buyer share in 2026. Vendors that claim ten or more 'Answer Engines' usually count chat surfaces nobody uses for vendor research. Depth on the four that matter beats breadth on engines without users.
Self-serve vs sales-led — which should I pick?
If you are an operator who wants to start measuring this quarter, self-serve. If you are running AEO as a coordinated org-wide program with SSO, SOC 2, and dedicated headcount, sales-led enterprise. There is no right answer; there is a right answer for who you are.
What is the difference between a dashboard and an action tool?
A dashboard shows you you are cited 12% of the time and your competitor is at 47%. An action tool shows you that, ranks the gap by impact and effort, tells you which page needs the rewrite, and drafts it. The cost is the same. The work saved is not.
How do I evaluate these in a week?
Sign up for two on day one — anything that requires a 30-minute demo to see your own data is the wrong shape for operator buying. Day two, read the first findings. Day three, ship one fix from each. Day four through seven, re-scan. The tool that moved a number is the one to buy.
